Like every other profession, training is a big part of career development in the transport industry. The more training you do and the more skills you learn, the more likely you are to increase your earning potential.

At Drive Personnel, we want to support our drivers and help them to achieve their maximum potential as a driver. As well as providing access to the training required to obtain the Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence), Drive Personnel can assist with further specialist driver training such as Moffett and HIAB, which can lead to better career opportunities, more choice in job role, and ultimately, greater earnings potential.

What you get for your money

When you compare the cost of HGV training and licences to the cost of a university education leading to an uncertain career, choosing HGV driving as your profession seems a worthy investment. Training for your HGV licence can take a few days, although trainees are given a year to complete the initial programme. Although actual training costs vary based on the type of licence attained, your HGV driver training will include:

  • Classroom training
  • Practical training
  • Student support
  • Job assistance

Students who train to become an HGV driver begin learning about commercial driving standards as soon as they begin their training programme, and their learning is dedicated to the essential information needed to become a qualified HGV driver. This means that trainees don’t pay to learn irrelevant information; every module and every class provides drivers with a fundamental toolkit to kickstart their logistics career.

To give you an indication of how much it costs to learn to drive an HGV or LGV, a typical 5 day HGV/LGV driver training course will cost in the region of £1,000 (depending on location and training provider).

Cost of Testing

The tests involved during HGV driver training are priced separately to the cost of your HGV training.  However, Drive Personnel can arrange these tests on your behalf so there are no surprise fees. The tests involved in becoming an HGV driver are as follows:

  • Theory Test Part 1 – £26
  • Theory Test Part 2 – £11
  • CPC Certification – £23
  • Driving Ability Test – £115 (weekdays) £141 (weekends)
  • Practical Test – £55 (weekdays) £63 (weekends)

Additional Training

Drive Personnel also works with experienced HGV drivers who would like to develop their driving skills. Drivers can undertake further training and gain an ADR (Advisory Dangerous Goods by Road) Certificate to enable them to drive hazardous goods like toxic, corrosive or explosive chemicals. This qualification alongside other advanced HGV licences can lead drivers to better career opportunities with extensive earning potential.

Why choose Drive Personnel?

Drive Personnel offers a reimbursed training programme whereby drivers can have the cost of their HGV/LGV licence compensated after they have worked for Drive Personnel for 12 months.
